2020 was not the dream year for travel but at Buena Onda, we’re looking onward and upward as we prepare for volunteer opportunities in 2021. To get started with a new year of new opportunities, take a look at these five tips when volunteering abroad and contact us to find out how Buena Onda helps you accomplish each one!
#1. Research organizations you want to work with.
It’s easy to say, “I’m volunteering in Guatemala!” But what are you going to do and where? By researching local organizations to the region you wish to do service work in, you will have opportunities to put your skills to practical use, while also visiting a country, city, town, you’ve always wanted to experience.
#2. Establish a budget.
We know that money is tight for so many people who still want to do good in their world. However, at Buena Onda, we work with our volunteers to establish a budget so your time in Guatemala is used to the utmost potential.
#3. Get to know the culture and the people.
When you decide to volunteer abroad, not only will you be doing good for the local community, you will also have the experience to become immersed in the culture as well as get to know the people who live there.
Take the time while volunteering to visit local places–shops, cafes, landmarks–experience it all.
#4. Step out of your comfort zone.
Part of the joys of volunteering abroad is being able to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. While you may feel secure in your skills, utilize your volunteer opportunity to learn new skills, make new friends, and branch out.
If this is your first experience traveling abroad, be sure to ask questions, and link up with others who have volunteered abroad before. When we can share experiences, we grow together.
#5. Enjoy it–time goes fast.
Make the most out of every second of your volunteer experience. If there is anything our volunteers know, it’s that there is never enough time. Expand your horizons, meet new people, and do good in the world.
