Animal Welfare

Sample project:

Work at a shelter & vet clinic for street & abandoned animals

  • Live in Antigua and commute to the shelter. You may also camp in surrounding areas on the project grounds. 
  • Tasks include veterinary and clinic work, walking dogs, hanging out with the cats, repairing runs and cages, building new structures at the shelter, cleaning and maintenance of all areas
  • Spanish not necessary

Construction

Sample project:

Construction of houses in impoverished areas

  • Work in construction and design
  • Live with host families or in Antigua with a short bus ride to the project site
  • Sample tasks include the design of new houses and the construction of new homes for families in the communities
  • This project requires good mobility and comfort with hard labor
  • Spanish not necessary

Education 

Sample project:

Education in indigenous village

  • Projects in teaching support, educational activities, and organizing workshops and extracurricular activities with arts and sports
  • Volunteers may stay in Antigua, and take a short bus ride to project
  • Sample tasks include supporting teachers in the classroom, organizing and leading special activities and workshops (sports, arts, gardening, etc), building and maintaining structures on school grounds
  • This project is suitable for any age and any experience
  • Basic Spanish needed for classroom work but none necessary for construction (if Spanish is an issue, we can figure out a solution with the project staff)

Sample project:

Coffee farming & agricultural sustainability in a cooperative

  • Projects in coffee cultivation and processing
  • Can live in Antigua and take a short bus ride to project site
  • Example projects include picking coffee with the farmers & processing coffee for sale
  • This project requires good mobility, ability to hike into the coffee fields, as well as comfort being outdoors all day
  • Spanish is helpful, but a translator can be provided

Environment


Sample project:

health, & community development in indigenous community

  • Projects includes health and dental outreach, working in clinics, and nutrition counselling.
  • Can live in Panajachel with host families or private accommodations
  • Example tasks include providing health care in clinics, working with artisan groups, distributing food to project families
  • Some Spanish required

Health & Nutrition


Sample project: 

Nutrition, education, and empowerment in indigenous community

  • Projects in ESL, education support and workshops, special activity workshops (sports, arts), artisan cooperative marketing, food and nutrition
  • Can live with host families or in private accommodations in different villages around Lake Atitlan
  • Sample tasks include teaching English to kids, helping women in the food tienda, organizing marketing activities for the cooperative, special workshops or activities for the kids
  • Spanish is helpful but not absolutely required
