Volunteer Testimonial: Looking Back At An Amazing Experience

Hello to all of our followers! Today marks the first day of our final week in Guatemala! My time here has gone by so fast I am sad to leave but also excited to see my family and friends at home.

Our first workday started with pancakes, watermelon, and coffee at Violetta’s. Following breakfast, my group and I headed off to our last work site. This week my group and I will be working in a Pueblo called Santa Maria de Jesus in a school called Jardin De Amor. This school was built over 10 years ago to give children living in poverty the chance to have an education. My group and I are going to be doing a lot of painting over the next week here.

Today we began by beginning to paint one of the walls Spongebob themed! We started to paint Spongebob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs and Squidward. It feels great to be adding such fun art to the school, and seeing the faces of the children watching us made me feel even better.

Following our day at the school, we went to a lunch of chicken and rice at Violetta’s and then went to Spanish class. During Spanish class, all the teachers did something different. We were introduced to around eight different exotic fruits. The teachers read descriptions in Spanish and then we were able to try all the fruits. They all tasted great but some had a slimy texture that made it hard to eat. I felt happy to have been able to try so many different fruits from Guatemala.

After Spanish class, my friends and I went out to eat at a café style restaurant for tacos and quesadillas. The food was great and I was stuffed after eating so much! To end my night I listened to some music and went to bed early to get sleep for tomorrow. This has been one of the best trips of my life and I am definitely looking forward to returning when I am older!
